The High-Stakes Art of PR in a True Crime Case

Think Crisis PR is Intense? Try Managing a True Crime Case.

Public relations in a true crime case isn’t your typical PR gig. This isn’t about product launches or thought leadership. It’s a charged arena where grief, justice and public opinion collide and where every word carries weight. When representing a victim’s family, the challenge is walking a razor-thin line between transparency and sensitivity.

This summer, Vigilante PR began donating its time to help the family of Megan Trussell, a college student whose death was quickly labeled a suicide despite overwhelming signs of foul play. Between mutual connections and a shared disbelief in the failed system, Vigilante PR and Megan’s family teamed up to bring media attention to this case. Megan’s family refused to accept a false narrative, and we knew that they needed help. We knew that they needed someone to amplify their voice, demand answers and force accountability.

We stepped in to build a strategic media campaign, challenge the official story and bring national attention to the case. What started as one family’s fight has become a calling for us. Through Megan’s case, we saw firsthand how the justice system can silence victims, and how powerful the right PR strategy can be in uncovering the truth. That experience lit the fuse for the work we do today, and it’s shaped everything we’ve learned about navigating high-stakes communications in true crime.

Unique Challenges of True Crime PR

High Emotions, High Stakes
Suspicious death cases carry emotional weight like nothing else. Families are grieving, communities are anxious and the media is ravenous for details. Any message released can either bring comfort or unintended harm.

24/7 Media Frenzy
True crime is a cultural obsession. Traditional news outlets, podcasts, YouTube channels, TikTok creators and online forums, like Reddit, dissect every scrap of information. This creates opportunities for awareness, but also risks of misinformation spreading faster than facts.

Legal Considerations
Every public statement can potentially compromise ongoing investigations. PR pros in this space should work hand-in-hand with the family, victim advocates, journalists and legal counsel to ensure every message is careful and strategic.

Navigating public communications in a true crime case requires a delicate balance of sensitivity, strategy and legal awareness, because every message carries weight and every misstep can have lasting consequences. The foundation of effective true crime PR starts with empathy. Controlling the narrative without exploiting it is essential, which means keeping messaging consistent and establishing a clear voice to prevent misinformation, but staying away from sensationalism. Finally, partnering with legal counsel is non-negotiable, as every statement must consider legal ramifications and one misstep can be irreversible.

Core Principles of True Crime PR

In true crime PR, strategy alone isn’t enough; execution matters. Practical tactics turn guiding principles into action, helping communicators stay one step ahead of misinformation and public speculation. This means holding proactive press briefings to fill information gaps before rumors take hold, monitoring media and social channels to catch misleading narratives early and practicing strict message discipline around a few core points. From trials to appeals, anniversaries and documentaries, sustained attention requires constant readiness from families and institutions alike.

At its core, true crime PR is about people, not headlines. For victims’ families, it amplifies their voices. In an era where true crime is entertainment, PR professionals must never forget: these are real lives, not content.
