CASE STUDY: The Fight for Awareness and Legislation in the Death of Megan Trussell

The Challenge

18-year-old University of Colorado Boulder freshman Megan Trussell was found deceased in Boulder Canyon after going missing in February 2025. Her family was left grieving and questioning an investigation they believed failed to account for critical evidence, conflicting information and unanswered questions surrounding her death.

Initially, Vigilante PR stepped in for one reason: to help Megan’s family navigate an overwhelming wave of media attention following the shocking ruling of her death as a suicide. But as we began reviewing police reports, autopsy and toxicology findings, witness accounts, video and other available evidence to prepare the family for interviews, our role changed.

What started as media support evolved into something much bigger: a comprehensive communications and advocacy campaign designed to help the family seek answers, accountability and meaningful change.

THE Work

Vigilante PR built and executed an integrated campaign combining crisis communications, media relations, public affairs, investigative organization and grassroots community engagement.

Our work included:

  • Building the Case: Reviewed and organized available records—including police reports, autopsy and toxicology findings, witness accounts and video—to create a clear, centralized picture of the case, unresolved questions and leads requiring additional attention.

  • Media Relations: Built relationships with local, regional, national and true-crime media from scratch, developing a sustained news strategy that kept Megan’s story visible while carefully communicating complex and sensitive information.

  • Family Support + Media Training: Prepared Megan’s parents for interviews, developed messaging, coordinated press opportunities and provided ongoing support before, during and after high-pressure media engagements.

  • Public Affairs + Government Outreach: Worked with state lawmakers and other officials to elevate the family’s concerns and push for greater scrutiny of Megan’s case and the systems surrounding missing-person investigations.

  • Community Engagement: Created a homeless-essentials drive that generated thousands of donated items, allowing the family to build relationships within the Boulder Canyon community and create trusted opportunities for people to come forward with information.

  • Tip + Reward Campaign: Launched and managed a dedicated public tip line, helping collect and organize nearly 100 tips, while supporting efforts to grow the reward for information to $11,000.

  • Grassroots Advocacy: Amplified a Change.org petition that surpassed 4,000 signatures and coordinated on-campus awareness efforts during CU Boulder Parents Weekend using volunteers, flyers, sidewalk chalk and social media.

The campaign required more than traditional PR. It meant applying the rigor we typically bring to high-stakes and highly regulated industries while protecting a grieving family at the center of an intensely personal story. Every decision had to balance public pressure with accuracy, credibility and care.

THE Results

The impact extended far beyond media coverage.

An Independent State Review

After months of advocacy and mounting public attention, the Colorado Department of Public Safety and Colorado Bureau of Investigation agreed to conduct an independent statutory review of Megan’s case—bringing an outside state agency into a case that had previously been closed at the local level.

New Forensic Testing

Sustained advocacy, media attention and outreach to state officials contributed to additional scrutiny of the investigation, including the Boulder County Coroner’s Office agreeing to conduct additional forensic testing on Megan’s stomach contents.

A New Colorado Law

The effort ultimately helped turn one family’s experience into statewide change.

Senate Bill 26-120, legislation inspired in part by Megan’s case, was passed by the Colorado legislature and signed into law in 2026. The law establishes new protocols for Colorado colleges and universities when a student is reported missing and expands missing-person training requirements for law enforcement.

Under the new requirements, higher-education institutions must take defined action after receiving a missing-student report and notify law enforcement within six hours if the student is not located or there is a credible risk to their safety.

Megan’s story is now helping change how future missing-student cases are handled across Colorado.

Media + Community Impact

  • 129 earned media placements from June–October 2026

  • 12.9M estimated coverage views

  • 2.78B total audience

  • 1.05M direct social engagements

  • 66 average domain authority

  • Megan Trussell's case has drawn national attention with over 1M views across prominent true crime podcasts and YouTube channels, including Crime Junkie, Mile Higher and Missing, bringing renewed scrutiny to the circumstances surrounding her death and her family's ongoing fight for answers.

  • Nearly 100 tips collected and organized

  • 10,802 and counting supporters taking action on Change.org petitions.

  • Over 105K raised in GoFundMe contributions following major media pushes

  • Thousands of essential items donated by hundreds of supporters for homeless community outreach in search of tips via Amazon.

To date, Vigilante PR has donated more than $80,000 in professional services to Megan’s family.

What began as an effort to help a grieving family manage media attention became a sustained campaign for answers and accountability—one that brought national attention to Megan’s story, secured additional forensic scrutiny and independent state review, and helped inspire a new law designed to protect missing students across Colorado.

For Megan’s family, the fight for answers continues. So does ours.
